Welcome to Masaru Kanetani's webpage!

Research Interests: Masaru Kanetani teaches courses on the English language and on English linguistics. His published work focuses on descriptive grammar of contemporary English, in particular of conjunctions of reason in English, from the perspectives of construction grammar and pragmatics. His 2008 Ph.D. thesis proposes an analysis that gives an integrated account of the conjunctions of reason, because, since, and for, and shows the validity of the proposed analysis. His recent works also include comparative (or contrastive) syntax, semantics and pragmatics of the English and Japanese languages. A monogoraph grown out of the thesis is published as Causation and Reasoning Constructions from John Benjamins Publishing Company in 2019. His recent research interests also include ideophones and langauge evolution.
