Attention: initial state change of roaming profile (local area) save setting

As mentioned in the following announcement in April of this year, the initial state change of the roaming profile (local area) storage setting will be performed for all users of all academic computer systems.

Change to Roaming Profile Save Settings
April 24, 2019.

Currently, the roaming profile (local area) is set to be saved for all users, but the initial status is changed by the planned system maintenance this weekend, and the corresponding profile data will not be saved. As a result, the setting information is not saved for some applications, so it will be restored to the initial state each time you sign in. Please note that point.

The setting is changed at each campus as follows.

Tsukuba Campus: May 18 (Sat)
Tokyo Campus: May 20 (Mon)

Note that this change affects, for example, Google Chrome settings (including bookmarks), Visual Studio Professional settings, FlashDevelop plug-ins, and so on.
In addition, please be aware that settings will not be saved for applications that place data in roaming profiles (local areas).

If you would like to save application data in the same way as before, please apply for changes related to save settings of roaming profile from the following page.

User System” on the Zengaku Computer System website

In addition, when save setting of roaming profile (local area) is enabled, sign-in / sign-out operation with satellite terminal (Windows) will take longer time than when it is disabled.

  3. Support

Problems and inquiries that may occur during the period will be addressed from May 7th (Tue), 2019.

Change to Roaming Profile Save Settings

This article describes the setting which determines whether to give priority to saving each user’s configuration for specific applications or to reducing sign in/out time.

Saving the configuration currently takes precedence. This time we will be changing the setting to shorten the time to sign in/out. However, users can choose to retain their configuration. (For the instructions, see the【Details】below.)

This setting change is scheduled for the following dates:
(It will be applied to all PCs in the satellite computer rooms.)

Tsukuba Campus – Saturday, May 18, 2019
Tokyo Campus – Monday, May 20, 2019

To learn more, see the details below.

【Details】

On the Zengaku Computer System, the configuration information of the OS and applications is saved on a per-user basis to the server as data called “(roaming) profile.” At the time of sign-in, the profile is sent from the server to the user environment; at the time of sign-out, conversely, it is sent from the user environment to the server.

In the Windows environment of the Zengaku Computer System, profiles are getting so large that it often takes a long time to sign in or to sign out.

This issue has made us decide to change the setting for all users and decrease the data stored as profiles. Specifically, while the data under C:\Users\ (Username)\AppData\Local is currently saved on the server at the time of sign-out and restored at the time of sign-in, it will not be saved on the server after the change has been applied. We expect this will certainly reduce sign in/out time. Be aware that from then on, the configuration of some applications will return to its initial state when you sign in.

NOTE: This change does not affect the Ubuntu (Linux) environment.

If you still want to keep the configuration on the server, apply through the webpage below:

“User System” on the Zengaku Computer System website

The application can be submitted starting Sunday, April 21, 2019.

Be careful not to do the opposite of what you want:
if you apply, the data under C:\Users\ (Username)\AppData\Local WILL BE SAVED to the server;
if you do not, it WILL NOT.

Restriction against Malware Communication on Zengaku Computer System’s PCs

To maintain security, the University of Tsukuba restricts communication from devices connected to subnetworks which are set as a client zone.

For more details on this measure, please refer to the following webpage:
Internet Security Management

All PCs in Zengaku Computer System’s satellite computer rooms are connected to subnetworks set as a client zone. However, DNS queries from the PCs are sent to the full-service resolver without such restriction, which makes it possible for malware to send DNS queries to search for its website name. To solve this issue, ACCC will be restricting malware communication to the full-service resolver from the date below:

Implementation Date: Monday, March 11, 2019

Thanks to this measure, even if some PC sends DNS queries to search for a malware website, the communication will fail automatically.

Email Sending from CGI Programs

It has become possible to send email from CGI programs using the web server of the Zengaku Computer System.
Details including setup instructions are as follows:

  • Use “mail.u.tsukuba.ac.jp” as the outgoing mail server, Different outgoing mail servers are impossible to use. If you do not specify any server, mail.u.tsukuba.ac.jp will be automatically set.
  • All destination addresses are restricted to “@u.tsukuba.ac.jp”. Messages sent to other email addresses will be discarded without being delivered.
  • The email sending commands “/usr/bin/mail” and “/usr/sbin/sendmail” can be used. You can send email with these commands or the CGI program itself can send email with SMTP Protocol.

Temporary Deactivation of Automatic Sign-Out and Shut-Down

ACCC has temporarily deactivated automatic sign-out and shut-down on Zengaku Computer System PCs. Due to a malfunction, both functions did not work as planned. After the malfunction is fixed, they will be re-activated according to the following schedule:

Tsukuba Campus : Saturday, December 22, 2018
Tokyo Campus : Monday, December 24, 2018

Note that screen lock is not affected by this work and remains active.

We apologize for the inconvenience caused and thank you for your understanding.

【Important】Introduction of Screen Lock and Automatic Sign-Out

Screen lock and automatic sign-out will be introduced on Windows of Zengaku Computer System from December 16, 2018 as follows:

Summary

  • PCs are locked after a period of inactivity.
  • If they remain unlocked for 60 minutes, automatic sign-out occurs. Any unsaved data may be lost in this case.

Descriptions

  • The screen saver runs if a period of inactivity (idle time) exceeds 15 minutes after sign in.
  • You can terminate the screen saver and go back to the original screen by pressing any key within several seconds after the screen saver has run.
  • The screen lock activates several seconds after the screen saver has started. To go back to the original screen, input your password.
  • You can activate the screen lock by your own operation.
  • The monitor goes into a sleep state if idle time reaches one minute on the password input screen with the background screen alone displayed.
  • The monitor also goes into a sleep state if idle time reaches five minutes after the screen saver has started.
  • After the screen lock has activated, automatic sign-out takes place if idle time goes over 60 minutes. Any unsaved data may be lost in this case.
  • When no one is signed in, PCs shut down automatically if idle time reaches 15 minutes.

Security enhancement to @u.tsukuba.ac.jp when used via mail software

ACCC will be introducing a feature for security enhancement which works on email clients (PC or smartphone applications for managing email accounts) managing @u.tsukuba.ac.jp. The same security feature has already been working on Active!Mail. This time the feature will be working on email clients which access and manage @u.tsukuba.ac.jp.

The introduction work will be administered as follows:
Description: Introduction of a security feature which locks the associated user’s access for 10 minutes if access fails five times consecutively
Date: Sunday, December 16, 2018

Even if this feature locks a user’s access via an email client, Active!Mail remains accessible. However, if login to Active!Mail fails five time in a row, the associated user’s Active!mail account gets locked for 10 minutes.

Please note that this feature does not work on @s.tsukuba.ac.jp (Office 365).

Increase in Users’ E-Mail and Home Quotas

Users’ email and home storage spaces on the Zengaku Computer System have been increased since September 24, 2018. Home storage space has been changed from 2GB to 5GB.
